AFTERNOON WITH MY CHICKS

Here's my little bunch of chickens. I picked them some grass to enjoy together.
My sweet Little Lady. She ate sunflower seeds out of my hand this morning.
Here's Buffy and Comet enjoying some of the grass clippings.
This is my little chirper. She sounds like a bird. I haven't decided on her name yet.
This is Little Man. He is so tiny but don't tell him. He thinks he's as big as Pop. He's so handsome.
He went in to see what was happening in the coop... nothing.

A close up. Little Man above and Pop below. What do you think?

GRASS TIME

My first time to give them grass. They liked it.

OUR NEW VARIETY PACK

I've been wanting to get a few more chickens and finally did today.

I believe this one is the Comet. Isn't she beautiful?
This one is a bantam. I didn't plan on getting any of these but they were so cute I had to.
Here's the only one I've named, the Buff Orpington. Her name is Buffy.
The Dominique. If I have any of the names wrong please let me know. (I just found out this is a Barred Rock).

PEARL'S REACTION

The afternoon my husband brought home the ducks I wondered how our rooster and hen would react. After all they've had the place to themselves for three weeks now.
After a little splash in the pool we got them out so they could walk around and check out their new environment. Pearl the hen was at the back of the chicken coop and they were around front. As you will be able to hear in the video she had a reaction. I'd never heard her cluck before, she certainly made up for lost time.

NEW ADDITION TO THE OUTDOOR FAMILY

My husband has a co-worker who found several eggs in her yard. They put them in an incubator and hatched the baby ducks. These three are the only ones to live. She decided to give them away and my husband brought them home this afternoon.
I went and bought a little swimming pool for them. They tried to get out in the beginning because they seemed to be afraid. It didn't take long before they started enjoying their cool environment. We had them outside in the chicken yard to see how Pearl our hen would react. She started clucking like I'd never heard before. She was a bit uneasy but didn't seem to mind after a while. We let them out of the pool and followed them around the yard for a few minutes. They all stayed together as they walked, they are so cute. They will be in with us tonight in a large pet taxi. We'll probably allow them to slowing adjust to being outside. Now it's time to build a duck house.
Isn't he/she cute? Does anyone know what kind of duck this is? I picked up a Backyard Poultry Magazine at Tractor Supply today and saw a picture of a Rouen. It looks the same.

JUST THINKING...

...how much I'm enjoying interacting with my new chicken friends on Facebook. Everyone is helpful and encouraging. This is a whole new world for me and I'm liking it thanks to you all. Please add some pictures to my page so I'll know who has chickens and feel free to make comments. I'm so thankful for each one of you taking the time to drop by.

EGG GATHERING TIME

I can't believe how much I'm enjoying the chicken and rooster I have. It's just something very special about going out and getting your own eggs. It's amazing when I think about it. They are so perfect looking and clean. A daily provision.
Here is our Pearl's egg for the day. You can count on her having one for you before 11 am.
Here's my very special "egg collector" Elijah. He is fascinated with the chickens and Pearl giving us eggs. He knows he has to be very careful.
Thank you for your assistance this morning Elijah.

POOR PEARL

Notice anyone missing? Someone has "flew the coop".

Oh where, oh where can he be???
He's not far away, just high above the coop outdoors.
About 12 foot high at least. This is the second night of this.
He flew back down into the coop area this morning. Looks
like he may be developing a habit, what do you think? We
don't have the overhead netting up yet. Well Good Night
Mr. Pop, Pearl is going to miss you.

PROGRESS AROUND THE HOUSE

We finally got a good start on the fencing. My husband had to figure out something with the rock problem we have. The metal fencing posts we had we couldn't drive into the ground more than a inch or two. He decided to use railroad ties then attach fencing boards to it to hold up the fence. It worked better than we expected. We got all of it done except the backside, it's temporarily rigged at this time.
Now they have much more room to roam around in. They seem to like their new area just fine.
I had to take another picture of my special "Coop Designer". He's worked hard again this weekend. I can always count on him when I need something done.
Here's Pearl scratching around looking for a delicious snack.

ROOST TIME

I took this picture a few days ago. I was wondering do roosters normally like the nesting boxes as well as the hens do? This was late afternoon and I noticed Pearl was on the roost put Pop wasn't. It may just be his favorite spot. I've come in from work a couple of nights and peeked in on them, he was on the edge of that same nesting box like it was his perch.
Here's Pop and Pearl ready to call it a night. He's usually in the hen house before 7 p.m.
I noticed today they were"panting" I guess you'd call it and had their wings out a little. I'd say they were hot. I put a frozen 1/2 gallon jug in their water bowl today to help them out a bit.
